We only do this week every once in awhile and it is awesome!

We leave right from the ranch and head south to Snow Lake where we join up with the Middle Fork of the Gila River. We will follow the river most of the week as we head about 85 miles south to the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument. All of our travel is in the Gila Wilderness Area, the world’s oldest designated wilderness area. It’s incredible country! Outrageous rock formations tower a thousand feet overhead as we wind our way along the riverside trail. Through meadows, Willow thickets, and Ponderosa Pine parks. Across the river about eight times a mile, enjoying some great swimming holes and then some hot springs mid week. A couple days we will take a loop and ride up out of the canyon into the high country meeting up with the pack string late in the day at camp.

We ride the same trail as Geronimo, Victorio, and Loco. Kit Carson and Jim Bridger among others trapped these waters and stayed at these camps. The country has not changed one bit since they traveled here.

There’s some fishing, some relic hunting, and the May riders are sure to find some shed Elk antlers.

We only take six folks along with us and travel as light as we can. This is no fancy safari.
