The wood was gone but I came up with all the axel hubs, three tire rims and an assortment of hardware.
Late in the day I used the small tractor and dragged the road filling in all the deep ruts. To end the day I took the backhoe down to where the hay trailer is still stuck. I was going to use the bucket to lift it out of the hole it was in. I went about fifteen feet and sank. So it now it’s stuck along side the hay trailer.

Last night just as we were going to bed there was a knock at the door. It was Lyndsey wanting me to come fast; her old dog Maggie had a stroke.
I went up there and she was in bad shape. Having seizures and eyes rolled up in her head and just generally freaked out. Maggie had really gotten old this past year, after fourteen years dogs do that. Lyndsey and I had already talked about the day that we both knew was coming.
It was here.
I went to the barn and got some Rompum, a horse tranquilizer. She was moving around too much to find a vein so I first gave her some IM to settle her down and then a few minutes later I was able to send her off to doggy heaven where I’m sure there’s a spot for that sweet old yellow dog.
Lyndsey had a dentist appointment in Silver City so she was gone all day while I buried her dog on the hill behind the old cabin. The rest of the day I spent on the tractor grading the roads. I worked them all the way from the main road back to the store yard about 1.2 miles.
Late in the day I got tools and materials lined out for a project I have been planning for about 13 years, enclosing the pole barn here near the house by putting up boards and making it a real barn instead of just a roof. Since I came here it’s been on my wish list, all these years we have used portable panels to make ten stalls but there weren’t any walls. Now it will be a real barn!

Lyndsey and I worked on the barn all day. The poles are steel so that makes it a bit more of a challenge. Years ago I had a fella burn holes in the poles to bolt 2x6 nailers to. So we first had to get them in place and that took all day. It was finally done just in time to do chores.

More work on the barn. Loading and hauling 1x8 x16’ boards from the store yard to the barn. Unloading, measuring cutting, painting with preservative and finally started nailing them up about 3pm. Got just a few feet done but all the prep work is finished.

Back to work on the barn but today things went right along. We got 40 feet of vertical boards up and it sure looks good. Sure is a lot of work but the satisfaction of seeing solid walls is tremendous.

I spent the morning helping Maggie polish and package the last of her Valentines orders she has been Banging out for the past couple weeks. She headed to Silver City mid afternoon to ship them out and stay over night doing errands. I spent the rest of the afternoon cleaning my saddle. I only do it once a year and with a cold cloudy day it seemed a good time to do it.

Lyndsey and I were back out with our good horses riding Loco pasture. When Lyndsey had been out on the 4 wheeler the other day she had seen 8 cows, 2 bulls and 2 big calves. We unloaded at Harleyville and went two directions around Loco Mtn. I rode the east fence all the way and Lyndsey rode from Big Loco and went over Ambush Saddle. We met up in the flats about five hours later both having seen nothing. It was discouraging to head home empty handed again.
The ground conditions had gotten a bit better but it was still pretty soupy in some places. It’s the roads that have really gotten worse. Along Gilita Ridge the sun had melted snow off the roads where it could shine through the gaps in the trees. The problem now is that you will be going along in thick mud for 50 yards then hit a big bump and be up on top of a foot of snow. Travel another 50 yards and drop off a steep bump back into mud for another 50 yards. It’s tough on the truck and trailer. I still can only go about 10 mph so going anywhere is slow.
Lyndsey won’t drive the truck at all. I found out today she has been thinking I was insane these past couple weeks. I asked her to drive the truck while I rode a loop and she said no way. I asked why and she told me no one in their right mind would be driving a truck and trailer with horses around on these roads. I haven’t given it much thought; it’s just what we had to do to get the work done.
Maggie got home late in the day, with a fresh supply of food and supplies and also news that she had gotten a new dog. We had been talking about getting a young dog to help Jack with the security duties around here, after his slip in letting the wolves get close we figured the old man needed some help. She went to the S.P.C.A. and found a 9-month-old German Shepard. I had a Shepard for 16 years and truly love the dogs. The dog is getting neutered and she will pick it up on Friday.

It was grey with thick clouds building as we did chores. It was warm as well, just the thinnest ice and the mud never set up over night.
Last week Lyndsey had seen that bull Weedy way up above T Bar Canyon with several pairs so we knew he had escaped the Snow Lake trap where we had put him the week before. We headed down there to see what was left in the trap.
I also wanted to put two new gates in the Trap fence so we could get into it coming off Loco Mountain without an extra mile ride to the existing gates at either end. To help with this we loaded our hand tools and put the 4 wheeler in the horse trailer then loaded the horses behind it. Ben wanted nothing to do with loading behind that thing. Dakota had no problem and was soon eating hay crumbs off it as we went down the road.
When we got to the top of the valley we could see it snowing in the wilderness as well as over Loco Mtn. The wind was blowing and it just didn’t look fun.
We got to the Lake and loaded the tools in the 4 wheeler leaving the horses in the trailer. It was raining.
It took two hours but we got the two gates put in, each about 1/4 apart. One of them is at the mouth of a long canyon that starts way up in Loco Flats about four miles away. It will sure make life easy. About two miles south is the gate going into the canyon we call The Gates of Hell, Lyndsey is pretty excited about this new route so she named this new one The Gates of Heaven.
We went back to the truck, it had been a steady rain the whole time we worked and I was cold. Lyndsey had on her rain suit so she stayed dry but also tore it with the barbwire. As we ate lunch 22 bulls gathered around the trailer. I guess it was an exciting thing for them. They pushed and shoved and growled at each other, it was pretty entertaining to watch. At one point we had to move the truck and trailer away from a five way wrestling match for fear they were going to fight there way into it and tear it up. I had that happen about ten years ago to a new truck and the side of the bed got all dented in.
As we ate we also watched the rain change to snow.
We unloaded the Dakota and Ben who were none too happy about leaving the relative comfort of the trailer and their hay nets. We rode the trap checking what was around. All the way to the lake and back all we saw were bulls and just three cows. There should have been 25 cows and six calves. We then headed to the upper end and check the three-way gate. The gate going into Loco pasture was knocked down with cattle tracks including calf tracks going through. I was pretty discouraged. That had been a week and a half of riding in there. I cussed myself for not getting down sooner and spending time working on the barn.
We headed over to the spring and as we came over the bluff above it I felt a surge of joy as I saw a bunch of cows. I counted 20 cows, but there was only one calf. It was the one that I had brought in from the ridge above the lake last week. I knew him because he was an idiot getting through the narrow gate there. Well at least we could get him home we decided. So we pulled the truck up to use as a wing going into the small branding pen there. We cut about half the group and moved them towards the pen. We had to get by the truck then make a u turn back along it to the gate. It’s a move we do a lot with the guests and one that teaches patience. It went really well.
The last hour Dakota had been a little shit. He wouldn’t walk had to jig and wouldn’t stand had to side step around. Just really annoying. We got to those cows and all his silliness stopped. As we eased the cattle around the truck he slow, smooth and quiet. Alert and thinking ahead, he side passed in slow motion thinking the cattle. He was absolutely perfect.
He can rate a cow and out think it better than Doc could. But Doc overcame those rare split second off mark mistakes by his moves. He was fast, fluid and light. Dakota just can’t make those moves. He’s too heavy on his front end and just has never really gotten good at working around his hocks.
But for sorting and penning work like that, a better horse I couldn’t have asked for. Doc would have made some show off snappy move at the wrong time and sent the bunch into a run.
After we had them in the pen I took Dakota in and cut off most of the cattle, there were a couple wild ones I didn’t want to be afoot in that little pen with. He did great in there even tho it was slick. He knew it and watched his footing. When we were down to four cows and the big steer I rode out and we backed the truck up. Now this steer started getting a bit wild and being an idiot as I figured he would. He runs about 575 pounds, is black with a grey beard from his chin to his brisket, he has a wild look in his eyes. He was running along rubbing his side along the fence, climbing the corners, almost getting over the top at one had Lyndsey not run around and hollered and whacked him in the head with a piece of plastic piping. She expressed her doubts about the situation but I told her I bet when we opened that gate he would run into the trailer before he knew he was in one.
We opened the gate, which formed a chute effect to the trailer. I was ready to take the whole bunch but that steer broke into a run from the bunch and around the gate he went right into the trailer. I quick jumped behind him and slammed the center gate in his face just as he was barreling back the other way. He was mad!
He charged me hitting the gate pretty dang hard a couple times. I stood there as he did it, I reckon he thought I was a pretty tough hombre at that point and backed off with his head ringing.
We loaded the horses, Dakota went on first and here that steer comes charging him. Wham! Into the gate he drives his head, I swear I could see his eyes spinning. Dakota is fearless when it comes to cattle so he just stood solid and pinned his ears. That steer backed up as far as he could thinking that horse was pretty tough too.
He was quite the rest of the ride home.
So we had five cows missing from the trap. All five had salable calves with them.
I figure what happened was that after we put them all in the trap the momma cows got together and figured out they were there so we could take thier babies so they planned a breakout. They got young Weedy to bust down the gate and lead them out. But the momma of that big wild ass steer gave it a moments thought before she decided the idea of us taking that damn kid sounded just fine so she stayed around. I probably give them too much credit.
Anyway we loaded up the four-wheeler too making a load like I’ve never carried. One steer, one mule, one horse, one four wheeler.
It had collected about two inches and snowed all the way home.
We put the steer in the corrals with another pair that’s been in there too long now. Put our horses away and started chores.
I got in the house and told Maggie about our one steer.
“You’ve been riding for almost a month and that’s all you have?”
I nodded glumly as she started quietly singing a line from an old song “ Why do you ride for your money…why do you rope for short pay?” She knows why I do it.
